How one family created their dream caravan – with bunks, and without compromise.
Reality hits quickly when most families start shopping for a caravan with bunks. They realise quickly they’re facing an impossible choice: sacrificing sleep space, giving up storage, or settling for a cramped layout that no one really loves.
For this family of six, compromise wasn’t an option – they needed a caravan with bunks that worked as hard as they played, with plans to travel Australia together. It meant rethinking everything, starting with the bunks.
Regular family caravan layouts were the inspiration, but not the solution.
The family loved our family caravans with bunks; they appreciated the value and admired the design selections, but they just weren’t cutting it for the way they live on the road—and so we moved our discussions into the Great Escape Caravans design suite….
Rethinking family caravan layouts to create a custom family caravan with four bunks.
Starting with our Wildone 22.6 layout as the foundation, we worked together to reimagine the bunk configuration, kitchen workflow and storage solutions from the ground up.
This family’s caravan wishlist included:
- Four spacious bunks
- A functional kitchen to suit their lifestyle on the road
- Maximum storage
- Well-set-up laundry
The result was a custom caravan featuring an innovative corner bunk layout for four children. A kitchen that worked for their lifestyle and clever storage hacks in every corner.
- We added extra storage under the kitchen fridge for pots and pans, and lots of drawers with custom heights, allowing for excellent organisation. Everything has its place and is within easy reach while preparing meals on the road.
- The sleeping areas have increased storage under each bed, and with the cavity sliding doors changed to concertina doors, the bunk space expanded just a little bit further, giving the kids some extra leg room. Sounds like a small change, but the results can be significant with a growing family!
- Electronics are safely tucked away in the bunk area with power sources perfectly planned for storage and safe charging.
- Now and then, this family has the need to hang items while travelling so wardrobe space was reconfigured with removable shelving to allow for easy hanging when required.
- A prominent feature of this family caravan is an external washing machine and the addition of a Vendline Drying Rack for easy laundry days when the sun is shining.
Inside the design suite – choosing custom colours and finishes for a family caravan with bunks.
Our indoor caravan showroom allows families to browse the full range on display at any time, in comfort.
Browsing each model on display enables each family to see how materials and finishes look on completed family caravans for sale, and to take that inspiration into our design suite, where it becomes the brief for our factory to build their very own Australian-made family caravan.
The process of designing a custom Australian-made caravan:
- Deciding on the design vibe (modern, warm, coastal, etc).
- Designing the caravan exterior colours and materials
- Choosing colours and finishes for the interior after considering the practicality of travelling with a family (kid-friendly fabrics, easy clean surfaces)
- Confirming interior appliances and any extras (fans, extra power outlets, etc.)
- Selecting tapware, door handles, and even the kitchen sink is open to customisation!
- Choosing additional extras, such as bike racks or a foldable wall-mounted clothes line
The custom caravan design suite has all exterior and interior colours and finishes on full display, meaning this family can utilise the suite to see their choices come together in person and be 100% confident before we get started on the build!
